Skip the marquee, drop onto the mat
Mallet Bay Madison Avenue · Memphis

Suite 4 · 2157 Madison

A room built around a mallet, not a cage

No driver net. No iron stall. The bay is a long carpet, a peg on a brass hook, a lamp we can dim to Overton-dusk, and a wall of heads that all have wings or a rear mass you can point at.

The floor

Twenty-eight feet of honest roll

The carpet runs from the Madison window to the brick at the back. That is enough to see the first hop, the four-foot wander, and whether the ball is still on the painted rail at twelve. Beyond that, bermuda owns the argument. We do not pretend a mat can grow grain toward the bluff.

The mat is a short nap, not a stimpmeter fantasy. Fast enough that a face left open shows itself. Slow enough that a mallet with lazy CG depth does not get a free pass. We vacuum it every morning because dust from Cooper-Young shoes reads like a pull.

  • Peg hang lives on the left brick, not on a plastic gauge in a drawer
  • The tungsten lamp swings on a boom so wings can be sighted at dusk-level
  • Window shade stays cracked unless a storm is throwing glare
  • Balls on the tray are the ones Midtown actually plays, not a range-ball dump

Fluorescent store light is a liar. It fills the wings until every mallet looks square. We dim to a brass-warm tungsten, then crack the shade so Madison sodium dirties the sightline. If the wings only work in a mall, they do not leave with a blessing.

What you carry in

The mallet you miss with, even if it embarrasses you. The ball from Saturday. Shoes you would wear at Overton, not a dress heel. A note about which miss has been living in your week — left start, right die, or a hop that will not sit.

What stays on the wall

Heads with different wing languages. Deep-CG mallets, shallow-CG mallets, face-balanced blocks, and a few that still hang like a shy blade. Inserts in mill, groove, and a couple of urethane faces we keep for feel arguments, not for catalog loyalty.

What we will not fake

Slope. Grain. Dew at 8 a.m. on Galloway. Wind off the river. Those belong outside. The bay’s job is the head: sit, hang, depth, and whether your eyes still trust the wings when the lamp is mean.

After the mat

A paper slip, not a sermon

You leave with hang, CG depth, length, lie, and a sentence about the wings in dusk. If we think the indoor roll is lying about a grain issue, the slip says so. Plenty of Midtown misses are bermuda, not hardware. We would rather send you to Overton with a question than sell a heavier mallet that cannot out-muscle a grain you have not named.
